The paradox is that the more of an individual we become, the more we understand that we are connected to all things. Only someone who is deeply connected to self is capable of finding the strength to oppose an oppressive system. Only a person who sees himself can see the same self in all life. A person who is not an individual may appear good in a benign system because he is obedient. But should the system change, that same outwardly kind and caring person will become similarly obedient to whoever takes charge. Fascism's primary concern is to stamp out those who think independently. When I think of the people who for me best exemplify individualism, I think of MLK, Gandhi, Tolstoy, Dorothy Day, Victor Hugo, Erich Fromm, Paul Robeson, etc. By the way, Christianity, at its roots, was about caring for others rather than about personal salvation. If you're looking for a good read, I recommend Tolstoy's The Kingdom Of God Is Within You, which was a big influence on MLK and Gandhi.
