The Great Awakening

The trees are budding
The flowers, blooming
The grass is growing
The world is alive.

No one told them
It’s just the time
A great awakening
It’s written in their genes.

From a long, unnatural Winter
They wake
They emerge
They grow.

Sticking their heads above the ground
Where before they had them safely tucked
Beneath the dirt
In the darkness
Alone.

But now the living realize
They are life.
This has all been put here for them.

They reach toward a sun grown warm
It is the season.
It is their season.

Through cracks in the sidewalk
Little weeds rise up,
Dandelions defiantly thrust upwards
From perfectly manicured lawns,
Proudly displaying yellow manes of non-conformity.

Leaderless, they thrive,
Waking for joy,
Not from alarm.

All join at last the evergreens|
The ones who never slept
But kept watch
And awaited

Unthinking they awake
Heedless, they grow
Fearless, they will live.

The evergreens know,
It was a long time waiting
It was a long, long winter
But this time was predicted.

Welcome friends
Welcome all
You have finally awakened.
You bask in the warm light at last.

You have answered the songs of the winged ones
Who inspired you to reach upward
To bear fruit
To multiply
To be a part of it all.
You are a part of it all
And the sun shines for you.
