If they give us enough bad choices, we start thinking that one of them can’t be all that bad. We start comparing our options, hoping that by eliminating the ones we most dislike, we’ll find the least bad choice. So we look at one and say, “He’s got a bad haircut.” And we look at another and we think “She’s got a shrill voice.” Another we’ve hated for a long time, but they seem to have made a fair point in the most recent debate. Maybe that’s the one. Or perhaps it is the first short Asian transgender we should vote for. It’s about time they get a chance.

A bad system is intended to give you bad choices. That’s how it’s set up. This isn’t rocket science, it’s something a child is able to grasp. The kind of child who is willing to point out that the empire is naked.
