Just as Georgia has the right to independence from Russia, so too do South Ossetians have the right to independence from Georgia. This they wanted, and this Georgia would not allow. Georgian and Russian peacekeepers were in South Ossetia following a peace agreement in 1992. It was not until after the CIA-backed Rose Revolution that Georgia invaded South Ossetia and occupied its capital that Russia entered the conflict.
