We are depriving Americans of clean drinking water, affordable housing, healthcare, and education in order to pay for avoidable wars overseas. Repeat this undeniable fact as often as you have to, until its impact is as great as its utter senselessness. We live in a system which the most emotionally and morally stunted among us have contrived. In order for them to get away with it, we the people had to be cowed. For them to get away with it, we had to be frightened into silence and submission. For them to get away with it, we had to be led down the path of selfishness and away from the path of community and concern and love. To get away with it, they had to get us to hate each other rather than love each other. To become arrogant and proud rather than humble and kind. We had to be taught fear rather than faith. More than anything, we had to be stripped of our capacity for critical thinking. Because without that, everything else could be rationalized.

We had to be taught how to step over people sleeping in the street and ignore our natural inclination to help those who are in need. We had to be taught that each of us are special little princesses and princes who deserve everything we get when we should surely know that we are gluttons who are consuming far more than we could ever need and far more than is sustainable.
