I treated myself to a couple of oranges at Christmas this year. Other than that, I eat locally and seasonally. I figure Christmas is a good time to splurge. As much as possible I've been unraveling my life from corporate control. I can't do it completely, but I'm continuing to reduce my reliance on them. Below are some notes I scribbled down this evening on the subject of eating locally. Keep in mind they are just scribblings. Take the references to God as metaphorical or not, I'm not sure myself:

I eat what God sends my way and try to avoid what the devil is selling. Accordingly, I eat according to the seasons, preferring to eat what is available locally rather than have it shipped across the continent. I avoid, as much as possible, giving my money to corporations, soulless and lifeless entities who are sucking the very life out of our planet. There are still local farmers willing to provide, unwilling to part with their connection to the land that has been instilled in them for generations.

I live in Wisconsin and it is now mid-January. Life is not going to throw lemons my way, but apples have stored well. This morning I had an apple for breakfast, apple cider for lunch, and apple crumble after dinner. It may seem tedious to some, but they will soon be gone and it will be a long time before I taste fresh apples again. Until the first of the berries come, I shall rely on dried apples and cranberries and some frozen raspberries that grew in our backyard. And when the strawberries come, I shall feast on them, appreciating them as few can. Each season brings its own array, and I greet the arrival of each new vegetable and fruit as the little miracles they are.

When I was a child, my Uncle walked us through the woods—real wilderness, and pointed out the blueberry plants. I gathered them up as one who had been introduced to a lost treasure that had been scattered carelessly. It was special, it was magical. It was spiritual. It was sacred.

I try to live a sacred life, a life connected to life, connected to nature, connected to reality.
