A View Of The World From One Of Its Dark And Quiet Areas
Like most every other human being on the planet, my thoughts are mostly constricted to the activities at hand and the conventional assumptions of those around me. It is often only by escaping from the daily routine that we are able to view life differently. And though I did not travel halfway around the world to gain a different perspective, I did spend 24 hours outside my comfort zone, which gave me an opportunity to see my normal assumptions and routines in a different light.
I was invited to camp overnight in a dark sky park, one where we had to hike a distance to get to our camping spot. The sights and sounds of my everyday life were muted — internet service was sketch at best — and I was permitted to get reacquainted with aspects of the natural world which are often too subtle to catch our attention.
I am of the belief that humanity needs to become better in tune with nature, that we must live in harmony with her if we hope to survive. I don’t know, perhaps Elon Musk and a few other people like him will be able to escape the destruction we are all part of before the planet is nothing more than a dying ember, but I really couldn’t care less about them except that I pity the rest of the universe should they succeed.
Like most environmentalists who live in cities, I tend to idealize nature…
